suburbs and rural areas are generally in the mid-40s. yesterday morning we were down near freezing much of the region. right near the potomac, right near the chesapeake bay, most locations mid-60s. away from the waters, eastern shore, many locations in the 40s, shenandoah valley out of the mountains. few sprinkles up in pennsylvania. that's going to stay to our north. storm team 4 hour by hour forecast for today. by 8:00 a.m., we will have still a chill in the air. sunrise at 7:26. then for your lunch hour by noontime, should climb into the low 70s with a light breeze and a delightful, dreamy afternoon. we ought to be peaking in the upper 70s by midafternoon, and that's really more like late august, early september. and then by 6:00 back down to the low 70s, heading back home from work and school. sunset today at 6:18.

appeal to voters in the states that could decide the race. president obama will campaign in delray beach, florida, before heading to dayton, ohio. vice president biden will meet him there. mitt romney will campaign out west. he'll join mitt romney in colorado. the republican candidates will also visit nevada today. both candidates are hoping last night's third and final debate gives them a boost going forward. president obama criticized mitt romney's foreign policy views and called them outdated. he used his stance on russia as an example. >> a few months ago when you were asked the biggest geopolitical threat facing america is russia. not al qaeda, middle east. call the 1980s and ask for their foreign policy because the cold war has been over for 20 years. >> and mitt romney countered saying the president has made this country weaker with his policy.

>> and i call it an apology tour going to the middle east and criticizing america. i think they saw that as weakness. then when there were dissidents in the streets of tehran, a green revolution, holding signs saying, is america with us? the president was silent. i think they noticed that as well. >> romney also claims iran is four years closer to having a nuclear weapon because the obama administration has not been aggressive enough handling the crisis. >> millions of americans watched the debate last night, but only a few people saw what happened in the minutes and hours before it began. both candidates indulged in debate traditions. president obama and first lady had steak and potatoes for dinner. they called it a good luck meal. and mitt romney watched his grandchildren play jenga. governor bob mcdonnell will try to help george allen pick up votes. he'll campaign in northern virginia. tomorrow allen's opponent tim kaine will visit the jewish community center in fairfax.

allen campaigned there yesterday. this morning police are stepping up patrols in bethesda after a woman was sexually assaulted. the attack happened at 7:00 sunday night on the capital crescent trail near brookaway drive. the woman was knocked unconscious and dragged into the woods. she woke up with a serious head wound and found her way back to the trail. another jogger helped the woman back to a nearby house to call 911. news 4 spoke exclusively to the homeowner. >> she was crying because she wanted the paramedics to be here right away. and i always say, they are coming. they are coming. >> the victim is in serious but stable condition. police are not releasing any details about the attacker at this time. >> police arrested a teenager in connection with the murder of a 22-year-old man in d.c. prosecutors charged 18-year-old in the murder of 22-year-old.

austin spent time in juvenile facilities for an arson charge. at the time of the shooting, he was wearing a court ordered gps tracking device, but it stopped working just before the alleged crime. two of the biggest supporters of maryland's same-sex marriage law will lead rallies this week in support of a suspended gallaudet employee. angela mccaskill was suspended from her job at the university for signing a petition to put the law to a referendum. baptist pastors will hold rallies on the campus to have her reinstated. mccaskill is the university's diversity officer, and says she signed the petition so maryland voters could decide the issue. today they'll discuss a bill that will allow self-driving cars on the streets. council member mary cheh signed the resolution after taking a ride in google's car. google co-founder sergey brin

welcome back at 6:15. the world's most successful tech company is downsizing, sort of. apple is expected to unveil their highly anticipated ipad mini today. the smaller version of its popular ipad is expected to have an eight-inch screen and use the new dot connector unveiled on the iphone 5. the price is unknown, but estimates range from $250 to more than $300. it's meant to cut into the rising number of small tablets from competitors. the announcement is scheduled for 1:00 this afternoon. and not to be outdone, microsoft is releasing its new tablet called surface later this week. and we should get an idea of the financial health of the world's largest social network this week. facebook will release earnings for this quarter. the network hit a milestone this time, reaching 1 billion users,

but the company stock has struggled since making its initial public offering in may. after opening at $30 a share, it's now trading at half that value around $19. >> there's new video of a deadly car bombing in lebanon's capital. check it out. a security camera shows the manager being sprayed by a wall of glass from the force of the blast. eight people were killed in the bombing, including one of the country's top security members. his death has sparked violent clashes in the capital beirut, and may be evidence that the conflict in syria is spilling into neighboring countries now. new this morning, iraqi police say eight people were killed and 24 others wounded in separate attacks. the attacks happened in the shiite neighborhoods of baghdad this morning. a police officer says three parked cars exploded at the same time in separate areas, killing six people. another officer says two mortar rounds killed two people around the same time. so far, no one is claiming responsibility. and news 4's tony tull is at the live desk with breaking news.

good morning to you. later this morning, an autopsy is expected to identify the body found in a recycling container found in new jersey. police believe the body is that of 12-year-old ougautumn pascua who went missing around noon this saturday when she went to a friend's house. when the girl didn't show up, her parents called police, and that prompted a massive search for the girl. over 40 police agencies looked for autumn until the body was discovered this morning. we'll continue to follow this story. at the live desk, tony tull, news 4. following a deadly shooting at a wisconsin spa, investigators there want to tighten gun rules. haughton shot and killed his wife xena haughton and two other women before turning the gun on himself. he had a restraining order against him. a court ordered him to turn in any firearms he ordered.

two days later he bought the gun used in the attack. the academy of pediatrics is calling for cheerileading to be called a sport in all states. about 26,000 cheerleaders are injured every year. laura jackson knows the danger. she was 14 years old when she broke her neck during a back flip. >> had this been a sport when i broke my neck and had they had stricter guidelines and regulations, this might have been prevented. >> by designating cheerleading a sport, cheerleaders must undergo preseason physicals. they would also be limited to practicing each season. right now cheerleading is a year round activity. children who eat organic fruits and vegetables lower their exposure to pesticide. a study about the the american academy of pediatrics found their indications that pesticide exposure can impact things like intelligence, behavior, et

cetera. researchers at stanford university found no significant difference between conventional foods and organic foods as far as nutrition and safety. 6:15 now. a new study says most women can wait three to five years between checkups for cervical cancer. according to the journal of obstetricians and gynecologists, women ages 21 to 29 whose pap smears show no signs of trouble should get tested every three years. women aged 30 to 65 years old should get tested every five years. cervical cancer grows so slowly, that pap smears can find signs even before a tumor forms. the san francisco giants are heading back to the world series after completing another miraculous comeback. heavy rain could not dampen the celebration for the giants, who won their sixth elimination game of the postseason, crushing the cardinals 9-0. the cards had been up 3-1 in the series but scored only one run in the final three games.

the giants now face the detroit tigers for the championship. former washington wizards star gilbert arenas is joining a new team in china. formerly known as agent zero here in d.c. has signed a contract with the guangdong southern tigers. he averaged just 14 points a game with the memphis grizzlies last season. the move likely means his nba career is over. ♪ gangnam style >> this is for all you hoya fans. that is former georgetown university center and current indiana pacer roy hibbert putting his spin on gangnam style in a flash mob fashion. hibbert organized the whole thing, surprising mallgoers at the indianapolis circle center. he got into it. check that out. he was helped out by his personal cheering section called area 55. according to yahoo sports, he even had the white suit jacket made specially for the occasion. >> very good. of course he has his own

that's mean. >> mean but funny to watch. a recent episode from showtime's series "homeland" titled beirut is back shows militia and snipers swirling a popular street. lebanon's tourism minister says it's a lively neighborhood packed with book shops, a starbucks, even some pubs. the episode was not filmed in lebanon, it was filmed in israel. the two countries notoriously don't get along. the tourism minister is so upset about it, he's considering suing the show. the producers aren't commenting so far. good news out this morning for local homeowners.

we see the first faint glow of light on the eastern horizon behind capitol hill. above this image to the right is venus. it's very bright in the eastern sky. very bright now in the western sky. up this way is jupiter. really bright this morning, just a few clouds coming through now. you can see some of the leaves are down here. and some of these trees here behind me, these are oak trees, those are really yet to turn much color. those usually are the last ones to go. we are getting a lot of beautiful autumn color on the other types of trees. these areas in the blue are in the 40s. the areas of green in the 50s along the tidal potomac and near the bay and a few locations out of the mountains. most areas in the 40s now. reagan national 56. and the view from space showing a few clouds drifting through us. they'll be with us from time to time this morning. a few sprinkles along the pennsylvania border and a few passing showers farther north. they'll stay north of us. the hour by hour forecast for the whole region by the lunch hour, low 70s. by midafternoon upper 70s.

her brooklyn apartment. someone stabbed the mother of four to death on saturday, a day before she was supposed to get married. the note warned that more pregnant women would be killed if malvo wasn't released from prison. police say they doubt malvo had anything to do with the murder. they believe the killer is mentioning his name to distract or confuse detectives. a maryland family is taking legal action against monster, claiming the popular energy drink is to blame for the death of their daughter. 14-year-old anais fournier died after a reaction from drinking two monster energy drinks in a 24-hour period. the cause of death, caffeine toxicity. since then anais' family has found reports of four other deaths in the past year alone linked to monster energy drinks. >> they need to be regulated. they regulate ice. they regulate band-aids. we need to get the word out there so this never happens to anybody else. >> energy drinks are not regulated because they are not considered a food. the fda is investigating the deaths.

monster insists it is unaware of any deaths linked to its drinks. you won't find them in new york. soon it could be harder to find the large sugary drinks in the district. council members michael brown and vincent orange both said during at large council debate they would vote to ban the sale of sugary drinks. a tax on sodas proposed by council member mary cheh recently fell one vote short. several businesses are suing to try to repeal the law in new york city. prince george's county council is considering to allow the public to weigh in before a fast food, nightclub, or liquor store opens. the bill says it aims to promote availability of health food and beverages as well as reduce, quote, detrimental dining options. critics say the bill is an attack on free enterprise. there's good news for homeowners in our area. your house is worth more than it was last year. newly released numbers from the online real estate company zillo

says home values in the d.c. area rose 2.7% from last yearment of that's the largest gain since june of 2006. the district saw the biggest gains with values rising more than 9% since 2011. zillo expects home values to rise at least another percent over the next year. a dad is resting easier this morning after being force the to help his wife deliver their baby on the side of the beltway. stacy ann bryson was scheduled to be induced yesterday, but baby aaron had some other plays. . she started having contractions, so the whole family jumped in the car and headed to holy cross hospital. they ended up getting stuck in traffic on the beltway, forcing dad to call 911. with the right instructions, baby aaron mason was born a healthy 7 pounds, 6 ounces. his big brother even helped with the delivery. >> he's crying. he's breathing. he's breathing. >> he is. gently wipe off his mouth and nose. >> okay. >> and dry him off with a clean towel. you want to tie the shoe lace around the umbilical cord. >> i was tugging on my

>> this is the kind of body language of someone who's in front with mitt romney, acting more passive than he has in past debates. it's really kind of an odd thing because they're tied. our national nbc/wall street journal poll showed a tied race, very close in the battlegrounds. mitt romney is less comfortable talking about foreign policy. this is not something he spent his life thinking about or talking about. he's much more comfortable on domestic issues, and you saw that, as you all mentioned, on the auto bailout, bringing it back to the economy. any chance he got, even trying to outline that five point plan he has. in the auto bailout, you go right to ohio. this is where this race is coming down to, and he's trying to be able to re-explain what he actually meant in that op ed that said let detroit go bankrupt, and there was this debate over government assistance. >> do you think there was enough substance to this debate to sway undecided voters two weeks away from the election or maybe to bring an obama voter over to the romney side or vice versa? >> i think it's really hard to

predict what's going to sway undecided voters because they are such an unpredictable lot. what we've seen from them is saying they really disapprove of the president's policies, but they like mitt romney even less. you just don't know which direction they're going to go. i don't think there are any major stumbles for mitt romney. i think that's what his campaign is worried about. there could be one or two things to set him off course. clearly, they had a strategy saying i don't want to offend anybody in the middle, and they can at least see me as a commander in chief. >> did mitt romney differentiate himself enough on foreign policy? in the beginning, it seemed like he was just agreeing with the president's policies. >> it's really fascinating because it was certainly less bellicose of a tone that mitt romney took during the republican primaries, and especially on iran, on the president apologizing for america. i think you saw romney try to draw some distinctions. you're right. on afghanistan, iraq, mitt

community center in fairfax. his opponent tim kaine will spend time there tomorrow. and those in support of a same-sex marriage law will lead rallies in support of a gallaudet employee. angela mccaskill was suspended for signing a petition to put it to referendum. mccaskill is the university's diversity officer and says she signed the petition so maryland's voters could decide the issue. now at 6:49, the massachusetts pharmacy linked to a deadly meningitis outbreak was cleared by state regulators after an infection last year. the inspection report shows the new england compounding center received a satisfactory grade. federal investigators are blaming the outbreak on tainted steroid shots. the cdc says 23 people have died from the fungal meningitis outbreak, including 2 people in virginia and 1 in maryland. another 285 people are sick. it may be the biggest mini announcement ever.

apple is expected to unveil a new product today. cnbc's bertha coombs tells us what to expect. >> hopefully everyone is right at this point, or they'll have a lot of egg on their faces. apple gets set to take on amazon. it's expected to unveil a mini ipad at an event in san jose around 1:00 this afternoon eastern time. the screen size of the mini ipad, if that's the actual name, will be 7.8 inches, the same as the kindle. it will compete directly with the kindle fire. lots to choose from this holiday season if you're look for one of those. amazon says the new kindle fire hd has been the top-selling product since it hit the market last month although it won't say how many it sold. the only surprise right now is how apple will price this device. if they're down in that $250, $200 range, it is game on for the holidays. back to you guys. >> bertha, do you expect the frenzy and the long lines for every other apple product for this mini as well? >> you know, i'm wondering about

this was the delays on 350, and it's back. as you make your way westbound, you're jammed to new york avenue at 23 miles per hour. heading over to 66 eastbound, sluggish as well. really from the bypass to the beltway, you're slow. eun, to get to the beltway, you're at about 34 miles per hour from fairfax county parkway. eun, over to you. >> thank you, danella. today d.c. council members will discuss a bill that will allow self-driving cars on the streets. council member mary cheh introduced the measure. google has developed a fleet of so-called autonomous vehicles. google co-founder sergey brin expects the self-driving cars to be available within a decade. controversy is sprouting at a major construction site over disappearing grass. crews laid down new grass on the median between east glebe road and potomac avenue, but it has since been torn up. the median will become a transit lane for buses.

alexandria's transportation director says the grass, although short-lived, is designed to cut down on the dust kicked up by construction. taxpayers say the grass was a waste of federal dollars. crews say the project is within budget. we've heard the marine's creed leave no man behind. now a former marine is applying it to a dog he rescued in afghanistan. sean dooling has raised $4,000 to bring home his dog named bolt. he found the stray dog while serving in afghanistan, built him a home, and even let him stay in his tent in the winter. there's that redskins blanket. they were separated when the commander of the base ordered the removal of all the dogs. bolt was loaded up and taken away. >> he apparently ran behind a convoy for roughly ten miles or so. pitch black, 3:00 in the morning. and all of a sudden out of nowhere, bolt comes running full speed right behind me. it was a good feeling, having your buddy back. it's an awesome feeling.
